Oklahoma Gin Rummy Rules
Do you know how to play Gin Rummy? Oklahoma Gin Rules are easy to learn too. If you'd like to try a new spin on Gin Rummy, try playing Oklahoma Gin with two to four players. This skill based game uses fifty two cards, but the number of cards dealt each player depends on the number of players in the game. If only two people play, then each player gets ten cards. If three or four people play, then each player gets seven cards. In Oklahoma Gin, face cards are worth ten points, and Aces are worth one point.
To win the game of Oklahoma Gin you must be the first player to lay down all of the cards in your hand. To lay cards down, you must meld them into runs of three or more cards of the same suit with consecutive values, or sets of three or four cards which have the same value, but different suits.
Each player begins his or her turn by drawing a card, and ends by discarding a card. Cards may be drawn from either the stick or from the discard piles, according to each player's preference.
A round of Oklahoma Gin can be won in three ways: Knock, Undercut, and Gin.
"Knock" means that a player has melded most of his or her cards, and the deadwood count (combined value of any unmatched cards left over in the hand) is equal to or less than the value of the opening card.
"Undercut" means that another player's deadwood count is equal to or less than that of the player with the Knock.
"Gin" means that a player has melded all of the cards in his or her hand, and then lays them down on the table at once and discards the last card, leaving no deadwood at all.
When someone employs "Gin", the other players lay their melded cards down. In this way, they decrease the deadwood count in their hands, and in so doing, reduce the number of points that they will be penalized with.
When someone employs "Knock", the other players lay their melded cards down. If any of the other players have melds that match those of the Knocker's original melds, those players join their melds to those of the Knocker, thereby reducing the amount of deadwood in their hands. Therefore, employing "Knock" provides one's opponents with a greater opportunity to reduce their number of penalty points, than does employing "Gin".
In multi-round Oklahoma Gin games, winners accumulate the highest number of reward points.
Employing "Gin" is rewarded with the highest number of points, 25. In such a round, each opponent is penalized with the value equal to double his or her deadwood count.
Employing "Undercut" is rewarded with 20 points, while each opponent is penalized with the value of the difference between the Undercutter's deadwood count and the opponent's own.
Employing "Knock" is rewarded with 10 points. Each of the knocker's opponents is penalized with value of his or her deadwood count minus that of the knocker.
