Kaluki Rummy Rules
Are you ready to ramp up your Rummy game? Learn how to play Kaluki Rummy, and you'll never get bored. Kaluki rummy rules require players to "think on their feet", so pay attention to the nuances of this skill based game.
Best played with two to four players, thirteen cards are dealt to each, regardless of how many people play. Another difference between this and other Rummy games (like Oklahoma Gin), is that in Kaluki Rummy there are wild cards.
In Kaluki Rummy, your objective is to be the first player to lay down all of the cards in your hand. You may lay cards down when you have melded them into runs of three or more consecutive valued cards of the same suit, or you have melded them into sets of three or four cards which have the same value, from the spectrum of suits.
Each player begins his or her turn by drawing a card. According to each player's preference, s/he may draw cards from either the stick or from the discard piles. A player's turn ends with discarding a card.
Building is an important element of Kaluki. During a player's turn, s/he may choose to add his or her cards to matching melds which have already been laid down during previous rounds. It makes no difference if the previously revealed meld was laid down by another player or by themselves. Joining melds in this way is called "Building".
Players who build, may do so in one of two ways: They can add a card of corresponding value and the missing fourth suit to a three card set; or they can add matching consecutive cards to either end of a run.
In the case of either a build or an original meld, a Joker can be used as a substitute for any card. However, if a set contains a joker, no repeated suits are permitted.
In Kaluki Rummy, the reuse of a Joker is regulated. In a 3 card set that contains a Joker, the Joker may only be released and reused if cards of equal rank are substituted for each of those missing in the set that the joker was taken from. By adding just one card, thereby replacing only one missing suit, one forms a closed 4 card set, and the joker is locked there for the duration of the round.
If a 3 card set contains two Jokers, a player may add a card with corresponding value of either one of the missing suits, which releases one of the Jokers, and forms a closed 4 card set with the other Joker locked inside.
When a run contains a Joker, a player holding the card which the Joker represents in that run, may use his or her card to release that Joker for his or her own use. If a player releases a Joker, he or she must use it to melds cards and lay them down during the same turn. The Joker may not be held in hand if it was acquired by release.
The two winning moves in a round of Kaluki are called "Hunt" and "Going Out".
"Hunt" means that a player melds all the cards in his or her hand, laying them down at once and simultaneously discarding the last card. The Hunt move requires that there be no remaining unmatched cards.
"Going Out" means that a player has melded all the cards in their hand, and lays each meld down, but not within the same turn. By gradually laying all melds down and by discarding the last card, with no unmatched cards left in hand, one "Goes Out".
Unlike some other Rummy games (like Oklahoma Gin), In Kaluki, the round is over when a player makes a winning call. The opponents may not then "lay off" any cards to reduce the number of points they'll be penalized. No matter how well the cards in their hands would meld with those on the table, the losers of a round are stuck with those cards and penalized for them as soon as the winner makes his or her winning move.
Players who "Go Out" are rewarded 20 points. Each other player is penalized by removing the number of points equal to the combined value of the cards in his or her hand.
Players who employ "Hunt" are rewarded with 40 points. Each other player is penalized by removing the number of points which is double the combined value of the cards left in his or her hand.
