Rules of Gin Rummy Online
Gin Rummy is a card game, which can be played by 2-4 players. The
game is played with one standard deck of 52 cards. The amount of cards dealt to
the players varies from ten cards, in a 2-player game, to seven cards in a
3-4-player game.
Before we can explain the goal and rules of the Gin Rummy game it
is imperative to explain two terms. A meld is three or four cards of the same
value, for example three tens or four kings. A run is three or four cards of the
same suit, which are consecutive, for example two, three, four all hearts. The
goal of Gin Rummy online is to make two separate sets of cards a meld and a run
with your hand.
After the cards are dealt the remaining cards are put in a pile
facedown and one card is flipped over to face-up and is the first card in the
discard pile. Each turn a player can choose either to take a card from the
facedown pile or the discard pile. Once the player has decided from which pile
they are choosing they can either use that card and discard a different card in
their hand or discard the card, which they picked up. Every player must pick one
card and discard one card on each turn.
There are three ways to win Gin rummy round: Gin, Knock and
Undercut.
-
Gin - A player has formed all of his or her melds and
runs using all of his or her cards in hand.
-
Knock - In a case that a player does not have Gin however
the cards that do not make a set in his hand have a lower value than ten, that
player can knock.
-
Undercut - In the case that a player knocks, if one of
the opponents has the same value of remaining cards that are not part of a set
or less than, he wins the hand and undercuts the player that called the
knock.
In order to win a Gin-Rummy online game a player must accumulate
the most points of any player. The point system works that a player that wins a
Round of Gin Rummy online receives 25 points. The losing players add up the
cards that do not form melds or runs (deadwood cards) and then double that
amount and subtract that amount from their total score.
A player that has chosen to knock his or her opponents and knocks
successfully is awarded 10 points and all the other players have the value of
their deadwood cards minus the value of the knockers deadwood points removed
from their total score.
In the case that a player undercuts a knocker that player is
awarded 20 points. The other competitors in the game subtract the winner's
deadwood score from their own deadwood score. They then take that difference and
subtract it from their total score. A player needs to be careful when using the
knock because they are going for 10 points but they can very easily give their
opponent an easy 20 points.
