Poker is a family of card games played using bluffing, betting and sequences in order to win. The first bluffing card games can be attributed to the Chinese in 969 A.D., when Emperor Mutsung played domino cards with his wife which instituted bluffing into the game. A Persian game called "As Nas" which included betting, bluffing and card ranking as integral components of the game was the next step in the creation of poker, as we know it today.
In the 16th century a Spanish game Primero, known today as "pokers mother", was widely played in Spain. Primero is card game played with three cards that in order to win the player needed to deceive his or her opponent into thinking they had a better hand than what they truly had. Primero, in the 17th century, became more and more popular spreading throughout Spain and her neighboring countries France and Germany. Poque, the French evolved version of Primero, was invented in the 17th century. The German version of Primero was called Pochen.
In the 19th century the French colonials settled on the Mississippi river bringing with them their beloved card game Poque. At this time the river-boats of the Mississippi were very popular and the game 3-card stud was the number one game. In 1834 Jonathan Green wrote in his book about another game "the cheating game" which in his opinion trumps 3-card stud and poker was born. The "cheating game" was poque, and it was better than the usually rigged game of 3-card stud because it was an honest and fun way to gamble. This was the birth of the modern day Poker.
Since the 19th century the Poker family of games has evolved into the most widely played gambling game in the world. Poker is even televised worldwide on a wide range of channels.
