Poker hands Ranking for beginners or pro', and other basic information you need to understand.

The purpose of poker is to create the best possible hand using only five cards, with the help of all the cards in the players hand and on the table. There are many different versions of poker online. Each game has its own unique setup; however they all consist of the same basic guidelines, either to have the strongest hand or to be the only remaining player by causing the other players to fold.
In order to rank the strength of each player's poker hand, the following scale is used (from strongest to weakest):

  • Straight flush- Five cards all of the same suit and in numerical order.

    • Example: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 all hearts.

  • Four of a Kind- Four cards of the same value.

    • Example: Queen of hearts, Queen of spades, Queen of diamonds, Queen of Clubs.

  • Full House- Three cards of the same rank, plus another pair from the same rank.

    • Example: Three kings and two sixes.

  • Flush- Five cards of the same suit.

    • Example: 2, 5, 9, King and Ace all of diamonds.

  • Straight- Five cards in numerical order not necessarily of the same suit.

    • Example: 4 of hearts, 5 of diamonds, 6 of clubs, 7 of clubs, 8 of diamonds.

  • Three of a kind- Three cards of same rank.

    • Example: three eights and any other two cards.

  • Two Pair- Two cards of the same rank and another two cards of the same rank.

    • Example: Two nines, two Jacks, and one other non matching card.

  • One pair- Two cards of the same rank.

    • Example: Two queens and any other three cards.

  • High card-Is the highest of the five cards in the player's hand.

    • Example: Ace, 2, 6, 7 and jack all unmatched cards the Ace is considered the high card.

Important to note: In poker the Ace can be played as the low card or the high card (Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace). However, when standing alone the Ace is the highest card in the deck.
