Poker Glossary of Terms

When playing any online gambling games it is important to understand the different lingo and phrases that are applicable to that gambling game. In the poker family there a thousands of different phrases and slang used.
The following is a short and to the point poker glossary of terms in order to make you from a beginner to a shark in poker lingo:

A-B Poker Glossary of Terms
Act - When it is a players turn, whatever he decides to do (bet, fold, call…) is called an act.
Active player - A player that is still in the pot.
All in - A player has bet all of his or her remnainding chips, and put them into the pot.
Ante - The amount put into the pot by each player before any cards have been received by the players. The ante can differ from game to game.
Ante off - To put the ante in for a player that has decided to leave game for a round (bathroom break, food, phone call….) and to keep it fair they have to ante as well.
Bank - Is the person that is in control of the dealing, pot and managing the game. In a lot of cases this is the casino or the house.
Bet - The money put down against the opponents at the table.
Betting structure - The amount allowed to bet within the particular poker game.
Blinds -there are big and small blinds. A blind is similar to an ante however it is money wagered by two players sitting to the left of the dealer before the cards are dealt in order to make sure there exists money in the pot.
Bluff - an intricate part of the game, the bluff is deceiving the opponents into thinking that you have a better hand than you actually have. This is used in order to scare the opponent out of betting or can be used opposite and making the opponent feel they have a better hand than they actually do and he will over bet his hand.
Boat - there exists a lot of different types of hands in poker. One hand is called a full house which is a grouping of two and three cards of the same excact value. The full house is also called a boat.
Broadway - When a player has in their hand a straight from 10 through Ace.
Burn card - burn-Before each turn over of cards that make up the community card a card is thrown out upside down or burned.
Busted - Busted can be to go for a certain hand and come up short(for example going for a straight and you only get four of the five cards) or to lose all your chips “you’ve gone bust”
Button - there exists a few types of buttons but the concept is the same to symbolize the stature of the player with the button. The most common button is the dealer button which symbolizes which player is the dealer.
Buy - in-the amount of money or chips a player must put in to join the game.

C-G Poker Glossary Of Terms
Call - When a player does not want to raise the bet but puts in the amount of the last bet in order to have a faceoff between the players hands.
Check - On a players turn not to bet anything and just wait to see what unfolds at the table. This can only happen in a case that there are no raises on the table and no blinds to meet.
Coffee housing - Is talking during a round in order to give a certain impression of what type of hand you might or might not have.
Community card - one of the cards that are turned over in the center of the table that can be used by everyone at the table.
Deal - Is the distribution of the cards to each player as well as the community cards in accordance to the poker game guidelines.
Dealer - The dealer can be the person who deals out the cards or the position of the dealer button and from that person the order of betting is established.
Fish - A term used for a player that is less skilled or not very good at all. Players like to keep their fishes busy and having a good time so they keep playing and lose their money.
Flop - The first three cards that are turned over after the burn card (see burn card), and are part of the community cards.

House - Is the place in which you are playing, such as the casino.
Kicker - The card that breaks a tie between players and gives one of the players the advantage and win.
No-Limit - a type of poker game that has no-limit on the betting.
Out - A card that you can get that will win the hand for you. Usually used in an instance that your hand looks like a losing hand unless you get an out.
Pocket - The players cards that only he or she can see. (For example in Texas hold’em the players two face down cards or Omaha the four face down cards.)
Pocket Pair - In Texas hold’em when a players pocket cards are a pair then that player has a pocket pair.
Quad - Four of the same card.

S-W Poker Glossary of Terms
Rank - The value of any given card, for example a three or a ten. Not its suit.
River - Is the last of the community cards to come out and can be a decider in the round.
Set - When a player has three of the same card in his or her hand.
Showdown - Is the end of a round when all the players turn their cards over and a winner is decided.
Suited -In Texas hold’em when the players pocket cards are the same suit.
Tell - When a player gives away a clue to their hand through a reaction of a hand of cards or bet.
Trips - When a player has three of the same card or three of a kind.
Turn - the fourth card to come out on the table or the fourth of the five community cards.
Wheel - When a player has a straight in their hand from an Ace to five.
