Poker Money Management Tips

Free Poker Bankroll Management Tips and Strategies

Poker Money Management tips (Poker free Bankroll)are very useful, Good poker players are disciplined money managers. The game of poker is a lot like life itself. If you don't learn to manage your money, you’ll end up broke, in debt, and working at jobs you don't like. Whether hobbyist or professional, poker money management is crucial for the success of any poker player.

Your Poker Bankroll

Poker Money Management

First of all, you need to keep your poker money separate from your other finances. You do this by developing a bankroll that is exclusively used for poker. This poker free bankroll is developed from your winnings, slowly and over a long period of time, not taken out of your retirement fund, rent money, or kid's college fund.

Your poker free bankroll should be 500 times the amount of your highest bet. So, If you bet a penny, you only need 5 bucks, but if you bet 5 bucks, you should have a bankroll of 2,500$. Being able to recover from a downswing depends on you keeping this 500:1 ratio of reserve money to stakes. Remember that even the best players have bad runs.

Winnings should go back into the bankroll, just as profits should be invested back into a small business. That way, your bankroll will grow enough for you to move up to a game with higher stakes, without violating your 500:1 ratio rule. Using some of your bankroll money to buy a book or take a course in poker strategy is a good investment. Think long term.

Your Skill Level

If you can't run with the big dogs, stay on the porch. You don't want to become chum for the sharks who wait for rookies to overstep their skill limits. If you're winning, wait for long enough to determine whether you're just having a lucky run, or whether you're actually consistent enough to move up a level.

Depressed people are often the ones who are able to be the most realistic about their own skill levels. If you're not depressed, ask your friends to give you their honest opinions about your ability. Be sure to ask friends who are more skilled and experienced than you are, and have no conflict of interests.

Impulse Control

Set a limit for both your losses and your wins. The danger of online poker, is that you don't enter a building with a wad of cash, and then leave when it runs out. In the same way that people spend more at shops when they use plastic, people often continue playing past their loss capabilities when the poker tables are virtual. If you can only afford to lose 100$, then stop when you do. In order to make this rule work, you have to be conscious of how much you can afford to lose, which means, that you have to stay on top of your accounting.

It may sound counterintuitive, but many professional poker players set a limit on their winning streaks as well. This is based on the notion that luck does eventually run out, and that it's best to retain the confidence that comes from quitting while you're ahead, rather than loosing your head. Winning can be like flying above 10,000 feet without a pressurized cabin or deep sea diving ; you run the risk of euphoria overwhelming your logic. That's when you make the really big mistakes.

Take a Break

You don't have to be in every round or play every hand. If you pace yourself, you'll be at the table longer, and play more effectively. Going broke is often associated with the bad judgment calls one makes when fatigued, especially when the first mistake is followed by several more in a snowball effect. Don't practice your mistakes! You get to the point where you are, by repetition, conditioning yourself to lose. You need down time in order for your brain to assimilate your experiences in such a way that it can then put the knowledge to work as a skill. Expertise is, therefore, acquired when you are not playing. This is the Tao of poker money management. You make more money when you are well rested and have had time to process what you've learned.

Poker money management is the discipline that enables the art of the game. Like ballet, you spend much of your energy developing rigid control in order to gain the ability and the freedom to perform virtuosic moves that dazzle. Learn to manage your poker money, and you could be to poker what Baryshnikov was to ballet.
