Chess Rules:
In online chess, the player with the white pieces always moves first. The players then take turns moving one piece at a time on the chessboard. If the player moves to the opponents square, the opponent's piece is captured and removed from the game.
A king is in "check" when it is under immediate attack by one or two of the opponent's pieces. The responses allowed after a check are:
1) Attack and capture the opponent's checking piece.
2) Place another piece between the checking piece and the king (only if the attacking piece is not a knight).
3) Move the king to a different square, where it is not under attack.
The object of chess online is to checkmate the other player's king. This happens when the other player's king is in check, and the player has no way to get it out of check.
Online chess games do not necessarily end in checkmate. The online chess game could also end if either player decides to resign mid way through the game, if there is a tie (through agreement, stalemate, and fifty-move rule) or if it is a timed game a player runs out of time.
