backgammon board was crafted from wood and the checkers were made out of stones.
The dice was made out of a variety of materials (depending on the region)
including, wood, stone, and clay. In the game's Roman period, 15 game pieces
were made of ebony and the other 15 game pieces were made out of ivory. The two
colors made it easy to differentiate between the two player's checkers.
History of the name of Backgammon: During the early Roman
period, the game of Backgammon was called "Ludus Duodecim Scriptorum", which
means the Game of 12 Lines. It was given this name because a 3x12 board was used
to play on. In the 1st Century, the game was referred to as "Tabula" in most
regions but was also called "Tavola Reale" in Italy, "Tavli" in Greece, "Tables"
in Spain and "Tabli" in other countries in Europe. During the 6th Century
the name "Tabula" was replaced by "Alea" throughout the British Islands. The
game of Alea was played with two dice and not three like in the game of Tabula.
The game was later known as "Tables" in the Gambling - English Language. The name
Backgammon was first used in the 17th Century. The name originated from the two
words "baec" meaning back and "gamen" which means game.
